Heat Synchronization

Synchronization of estrus can be done in several ways which all are common and require good management.

The Process

By moving the sow from the farrowing unit to the service unit this will create positive stress and most sows will go into heat at the same time.

Because:

  • Drastic change to the daily routine

  • Stop of lactation

Problems

If there are delays with the sows coming into heat, you could let them be mixed together for an hour or two when weaned, before they enter the service unit.

Because:

  • More stress due to fighting as they establish the alpha
  • Monitor mixed sows to avoid excessive injury

Problems

Some sows don’t synchronize with the other sows after weaning even if the two steps before are followed.

Actions:

Move the sows to a different pen/crate the same day as a new group of sows are being weaned

Because:

  • Stress because of new space
  • New boar, maybe sexier than the other
  • They can be heat checked with the newly weaned sows + bump feeding

Seasonal Effects

Sows have the highest fertility in the cooler months

Lowest fertility are in warmer months

Success Factors in Pig Production

Procurement

Extension Officer visits the farm and give recommendations (report) on the health status of the animal, weights of the animal.

Extension Officer then notify Pig Procurement office of farmer intent to deliver pigs.

Pig Procurement Office then issues an LPO together with a Health Certificate to be filled by Veterinary Officer before delivery of pigs.

Vet office at FCL issue farmer with No Objection Permit.

Farmer delivers the documents (LPO, Vet Health Certificate and No Objection Permit) to county Veterinary offices.

County Veterinary Officer then visits the farm and fills for the farmer Vet Certificate and write a Movement Permit after confirming the animals are free from diseases.

Farmer delivers pigs to Farmers Choice accompanied by Original Movement Permit and Veterinary Health Certificate.

Verification of documents is done at the gate and if the farmer has the relevant documents is allowed in.

Accepted pigs are marked with a specific number and animals proceed for slaughter.

Once passed fit for human consumption, the carcass is weighed and process of settlement starts.

Pig Transportation Guide

  1. Have the necessary original valid documents readily – LPO, Health Certificate, and Movement Permit.
  2. Prepare the transport vehicle. Ensure it has:
    • Sufficient ventilation (good flow of air)
    • Canopy to protect from extreme temperatures (No Polythene)
    • Enough space to avoid overcrowding – overcrowding results in suffocation, injuries, and deaths
    • Non-slip floors by providing bedding (straw, wood shavings)
  3. Health Check – ensure pigs are in good health, free from diseases which could affect other animals
  4. Food and water – should not be fed 6 hours before transportation but allowed drinking water even during transportation
  5. Train staff on proper handling and transportation techniques
