To the youthful Dominic, the day had started ordinarily and was going to end the usual way. His usual routine is to wake up, have something for breakfast, head out to his smokie vending business which he runs in the center of Nairobi city and along Tom Mboya Street, give it his best each day, and then head back home, late in the evening tired but with the joy of feeding the city.
Just before he closed his business day, the turn of events on the late evening of Thursday 29th March 2024 did not come close to his expectation. Dominic found himself in the mix of a situation that gave him no option but to step up and take action. First, he heard a scream, on looking, a lady lay flat on the pavement, next to her, a male counterpart. But wait, it was the mother, having a baby, Yes!
Dominic had to act and act fast, he quickly recalled what he saw the doctors doing to help his wife birth his child. Even more important was for Dominic to stay focused on saving the life if not lives that were at stake. Luckily there was a nearby pharmacy, where Dominic secured some medical tools such as a clipper and razor, and, with the help of one more ‘tool’ from his station, paper, he and his colleagues saved the lives of both mom and child! What an amount of courage and goodwill!
We visited Dominic to appreciate and congratulate him as one of our Farmer’s Choice Smokie vendors who has sent smiles on the faces of many in Kenya and around the world.
Congratulations Dominic, you are a hero of our time and a great encouragement to the society. We also acknowledge all the people who got involved; the father of the child, Dominic’s colleagues, the paramedics who brought in an ambulance, just in time, the Pharmacy staff who offered medical tools, the nursing home that took mother and child in to ensure they were safe and sound, and the journalist who brought the good news to Kenya and the world. Thank you, Dominic, Thank you all.
